SBCHC Advocacy in Austin
SBCHC Leadership Travels to the State Capitol in Austin to Advocate for Community Health Centers
In January, Spring Branch Community Health Center leadership attended the Policy and Issues Conference of the Texas Association of Community Health Centers in Austin. The group met with state representatives and senators of the 88th Texas Legislature to advocate for Community Health Centers, and to ask them to support the vulnerable patients and clients of these centers.
Focus Areas for Support
The conference emphasized the acute need for more resources for maternal healthcare in Texas, where studies have shown that nearly 90% of deaths of new mothers are preventable. Attendees also discussed the increased need for health center facilities and healthcare providers to care for the growing number of uninsured and economically challenged patients who depend on these publicly-supported healthcare facilities. Health center leaders, including those from SBCHC, met with state legislators and elected officials to explain in detail the needs facing residents in our local communities, and the long-term cost savings to be gained from increasing primary and preventative care for all Texans through community-based health centers.
