Cooking Classes with Free Food and Supplies Help Patients Learn Healthy Habits

On Saturday January 14 at our Hillendahl clinic, SBCHC’s Registered Dietitian Ngan Ly helped patients and neighbors start 2023 fresh with the first cooking class sponsored by The American Heart Association with groceries from  The Common Market.

In addition to expert instruction, each participant received fresh food to take home, a new cooler, a cookbook filled with heart-healthy recipes and cooking tools to make it all come together. Emphasizing how food is our best medicine, participants learned how to make small changes in the kitchen to support a healthy lifestyle.

Response to the announcement for this first nutritional cooking class from our patients and members of the community was tremendous. Over 100 individual and families expressed an interest or desire to attend, and on the day of the event, over 30 people, parents and children, filled our Community Education Room at the Hillendahl Clinic to receive informative and practical instruction on food preparation, as well as an initial supply of healthy food and tools and resources to help participants continue to make nutritious meals for themselves and their families.

May Class

Because of the overwhelming interest in and enthusiastic response to our first Healthy Cooking Class, SBCHC was able to hold our second class on May 6, 2023 from 12 noon to 2 PM. Twenty-three community members came together to receive more expert advice on planning and preparing healthy meals, and again fresh food in coolers with recipes and cooking tools to take home.
